Tekla

What is a Tekla Structures model and what can it produce for my fabrication project?

Direct Answer

A Tekla Structures model is a fully parametric 3D representation of every steel member and connection in your structure. From this single model, the detailer generates piece mark drawings, erection plans, connection details, BOM, CNC/DSTV files, and IFC exports — all synchronized, so a change to the model updates every downstream output automatically.

Full Explanation

In Tekla, every member is an object with real dimensions, material grade, piece mark, and connection data. Connections are modeled explicitly — a bolted shear tab connection contains the tab plate, bolts, welds, and hole pattern as individual objects. This means the BOM is always accurate to what is modeled. Clash detection can be run within the model to identify interference between members before any steel is cut. The DSTV/NC1 files generated from the model go directly to CNC drilling and cutting machines, eliminating manual programming.

What This Means for Your Shop

A Tekla model is the most valuable digital asset on your project. Request that your detailer deliver the Tekla model (native .db1 file or at minimum an IFC export) so you can use it for clash detection, field coordination, and future modifications.

Common Mistakes

Treating the Tekla model as the detailer's deliverable, not yours. Fabricators who receive and maintain the model can use it for re-detailing additions, as-built documentation, and owner closeout.

Recommended Process

In your detailing contract, specify that the model is a deliverable. Agree on the file format, model version, and delivery schedule. Verify at project close that the model reflects all as-built revisions.
