Superseded drawings reach the floor through gaps in distribution control: a new revision is emailed to the project manager but not forwarded to the shop foreman; a binder on the production line was assembled from files that were current three weeks ago and has not been updated; a CNC machine still has the old NC file because no one replaced it when the drawing changed. All of these are process failures that can be prevented with a written revision distribution protocol.
The Cost of Fabricating to a Superseded Drawing
If a member is cut, drilled, or welded based on a superseded drawing and the error is caught before assembly, the cost is the material and labor to remake the component. If the error is caught during inspection after painting, the cost includes paint stripping, rework, re-blasting, and re-painting. If the error reaches the field during erection, it also includes ironworker delay while a field fix or replacement member is sourced. On a critical path member, that delay can cost tens of thousands of dollars per day.
How to Prevent Superseded Drawings from Circulating
When a new revision is issued, immediately retrieve all copies of the prior revision from the shop floor, binder stations, and any digital locations where the old file was saved. Physically stamp the old revision 'SUPERSEDED — VOID — DO NOT USE' in red. Archive it in a separate location. Confirm in writing with the shop foreman that the new revision has replaced the old one everywhere it was in use.
Digital Drawing Systems and Version Control
Physical binders and paper drawing sets are the highest-risk environment for superseded drawings — because there is no system-level enforcement of version currency. Digital drawing distribution systems — project management platforms like Procore, Autodesk Build, or SharePoint with version control enabled — allow revision tracking at the file level, automatically flag outdated files, and can be configured to lock out superseded revisions from download. When drawings are distributed digitally, the platform's version log becomes the revision register. Require that all drawing access routes through the platform, not through email attachments, which have no version control.

When in doubt, cross-reference the title block revision against the drawing register before any fabrication decision is made.
Liability Implications of Fabricating to a Superseded Drawing
The AISC Code of Standard Practice Section 4.4 places responsibility on the fabricator to fabricate from approved and current drawings. A fabricator who uses a superseded drawing — even if it was incorrectly in circulation — bears responsibility for the resulting non-conformance unless they can demonstrate that the revision distribution process failed through no fault of their own. Maintaining a written drawing revision register and a physical drawing distribution log gives the fabricator the documentation to make this case. Without that documentation, the fabricator has limited recourse when the cost of rework is disputed.
Special Risks in Multi-Phase and Fast-Track Projects
Multi-phase or phased-delivery projects generate elevated superseded drawing risk because different drawing zones are at different revision levels simultaneously. A shop working Phase 1 steel may receive Phase 2 drawing updates that inadvertently affect shared members — transfer beams that serve both phases, columns running continuously through multiple levels. Without a drawing register that tracks revision status by phase and by member, the shop may not realize that a Phase 1 member's drawing has been updated as part of a Phase 2 addendum. Preventing superseded CNC file incidents requires the same distribution discipline as drawings: when a drawing is revised, the detailer must regenerate the NC file, label it with the new revision identifier, and replace the prior file in the CNC machine's active folder. Shops that allow NC files to accumulate in a single folder without clear revision labeling — relying on file date stamps rather than revision numbers to identify the current file — are one accidental rollback away from a batch of incorrectly drilled members. The CNC file naming convention should incorporate the piece mark and revision letter as mandatory fields, matching the drawing title block revision exactly.
