Connections

What is a slip-critical bolted connection and when is it required?

Direct Answer

A slip-critical connection is a high-strength bolted joint where the bolts are fully pretensioned and the faying (contact) surfaces are prepared to a specific Class (A, B, or C) to prevent slip under service loads. Slip-critical connections are required where cyclic loads, vibration, connection reversal, or fatigue is a concern — and in seismic connections where AISC 341 specifically requires them.

Full Explanation

In a slip-critical joint, the structural capacity is provided by friction between the mated surfaces (not bolt bearing). Bolt pretension creates clamping force; the coefficient of friction of the prepared surface (slip coefficient) determines the slip resistance. Class A surfaces (unpainted clean mill scale or Class A coatings, μ = 0.35) and Class B surfaces (blast-cleaned or Class B coatings, μ = 0.50) are most common. The faying surfaces must not be primed with standard primer — only slip-critical-approved coatings (hot-dip galvanize, specific organic zinc primers) maintain the required friction coefficient.

What This Means for Your Shop

Slip-critical connections require two special fabrication controls: (1) bolt installation to full pretension using turn-of-nut, twist-off (TC bolt), or direct tension indicator method, and (2) faying surface preparation and protection through shipping. Both require documentation for special inspection.

Common Mistakes

Priming faying surfaces with standard red oxide primer in a slip-critical connection. The primer creates a Class D surface (μ = 0.25) that significantly reduces slip resistance — a structural deficiency.

Recommended Process

Mark all slip-critical connections on your shop drawing set. Instruct the blasting and painting crew to mask or leave bare all faying surfaces. Protect faying surfaces during shipping with temporary covers. Document faying surface condition in your QC records.
