Can Point-Cloud or Laser-Scan Data Be Used for Steel Detailing?

Point-cloud scanning has become a standard tool for renovation and retrofit steel projects where existing conditions must be accurately captured before detailing can begin. For detailers, point clouds provide verified existing conditions rather than inferred ones — reducing the RFIs and field rework that result from detailing to drawings that don't match reality.

When Point-Cloud Data Is Useful

Point-cloud scanning adds value on any project where existing conditions are relevant to new steel design — primarily renovation, addition, and retrofit work. Scanning the existing structure before detailing begins captures accurate dimensions of existing framing, slab edges, column locations, and any obstructions that must be accounted for in the new steel design. For greenfield projects on level ground, scanning typically adds cost without benefit; for industrial renovation or building addition projects, it frequently prevents more cost in field rework than it costs to perform.

How Point Clouds Are Imported into Tekla

Tekla Structures can import point-cloud data in several formats including .xyz, .las, .pts, and the Trimble native format. The imported cloud appears as a background reference in the model — non-editable, but visible and measurable. The detailer models the new steel against the point cloud, verifying clearances, connection points to existing structure, and any interference with existing mechanical, electrical, or architectural elements that appear in the scan. Dimensions from the cloud are accurate to within 1/4" for most scanner types.

Limitations of Point-Cloud Data

A point cloud captures what the scanner can see — not what is behind finishes, inside columns, or occluded by equipment. For structural detailing, this means hidden conditions like existing column sizes, connection types inside wall enclosures, and reinforcing in existing concrete are not captured. Point-cloud data should always be supplemented with selective physical investigation where hidden conditions affect the new structural design.
